White after Labor Day?

With Labor Day coming up on September 6th, I thought I'd do a post to get everyone's opinions about white after labor day and all of the other summery fabrics post labor day. The " rule" is that you are only supposed to wear white after memorial day (with the exception of Easter) and through to Labor Day. Do you follow this "rule"? I have been following it for years, however, ever since I went to college, I have made my own exception.
Reason being is that I attend school in the south where it is hotter for a lot longer than in Pittsburgh and I can wear my whites, seersucker, linen, espadrilles, madras, and eyelet well through September, and even in October there are times when it reaches 80 degrees and I catch myself reaching for my linen dresses, madras skirts, and the like.
I know a lot of people are picky about the "rule", and other people don't even acknowledge that the "rule" exists. Does anyone else feel that this fashion "rule" doesn't apply as much to southern states or does anyone feel that this "rule" is very outdated?
All in all, while I don't think it'd be appropriate to do white after Labor Day in Pittsburgh, I will keep wearing my summer fabrics at school until it gets cool enough to put them into storage. I'd love to hear your take on this fashion "rule"! Have a fabulous day!
Yours,
sCe

I definitely wear winter white; I have a favorite wool skirt in a creamy white.

As you mentioned, I think you need to dress for the climate. It's still warm, even hot here in PA, so I'll still wear my lighter clothing until the cool weather arrives.

My mom's from the Midwest and she used to adhere to this, but it's just impractical in FL! I usually wear white, etc. through October. November's just too late, and I refuse to wear any type of flip-flop in December. I don't care if it IS 83 outside.

I go back and forth on this rule. I live in Savannah, so it is still HOT here in September and October. I just can't decide what my stance on the rule is. I usually will stretch my summer wardrobe to end of September, but come October I usually will bring out the Fall stuff. I just have had to buy a lot of Fall colored short sleeved items!

I refuse to follow the white after labor day rule. I live in Miami and it's always super hot so I'll wear my spring and summer clothes if I want to!

I follow ther rule. It is something my mother and grandmothers have always enforced. I remember in college having a standards meeting the week before every year to remind us that we can't wear white after labor day or our linen. Yes, in the south it is still so hot you could wear linen but don't.

I don't follow the rule exactly, but I try to take it into consideration. I live in the south too, and it does get very hot. I will wear white through the end of September. After that, I will stear wear my white pants, they are thicker, not linen, but I will pair it with more fall-winter like colors.

I think the rule is extremely outdated- it's all about the fabric. If it's a heavy wool or knit, or other 'fall/winter' appropriate fabric... it's game. I love creamy white peacoats or a good pair of wool trousers.

It is so funny you posted this today. I basically posted a little of the same thing. We were discussing this in the car 2 weeks ago. My daddy and I are pretty much sticklers when it comes to the rules, but my mother says you can make concessions. She says when the "rules" were made, even in the South, there were still 4 true seasons. Now they all run together. Keds go year round. Even though they say madras should not be worn, I think true madras can. And many of them bleed into beautiful fall colors. I definitely don't do seersucker or eyelet or dressy white shoes after Labor Day. However, I will be at the beach much of September, and I am sure I will break some rules with my sandals, McKims, white shorts, maybe even my white jeans, and maybe even a linen Lilly piece or 2. And as I posted on my blog, when it is still 90+ degrees and humid, you just can't help it and the calendar says fall doesn't start until the 23rd. (No disrespect to Miss Janice!)

For me its more about a feel than a strict rule. so long as it still feels summery and warm you're in the clear but once fall has truly come its a no-go.

I for one think the rule is a tad bit outdated! I like wearing white jeans into the fall, and am looking for a nice white winter peacoat right now! I totally agree on the summer fabrics, that those should be kept in the summer months with the exception of maybe a few weeks in September. I like white too much to wear it just in the summer months!

I'm totally on the same page. It will be warm enough and sunny enough through October that white will still be very appropriate. I have a super crisp pair of white jeans that I'll wear with a Vineyard Vines sweater that's navy blue and it doesn't look bad even in October. I'm all for white/seersucker/eyelet! Yay southern schools!

Do it. I definitely don't like that "rule". Sometimes the weather is so warm still in September that summer clothes are totally fine. I also think it's appropriate to wear white slacks or skirts with a fall colored top (like a pumpkin color) and be appropriate for that transitional time between the seasons. Besides, I have a white wool skirt that I definitely plan to wear in the winter. Honestly, I don't think anyone really cares much about that rule anymore.

I'm from the South, and it is just so hot here until the end of September! I personally don't wear white after Labor Day, but I don't think it's a problem if others do. By the beginning of October, I start only wearing my fall wardrobe and put away all of my summer stuff!

P.S. I'm hosting a giveaway that you should check out!

I'm wearing white linen today! Like everything that cann't be worn on Tuesday is being worn this weekend. Ha.

I don't think that that rule is mandatory, especially if you live down south, where its warm. I usually break that rule more towards the spring, instead of the fall. Plus, when I go on vacation to the beach in the winter, or something.

PS: I tagged you in a post of mine that will be posted tomorrow, Labor Day.

I think it depends on where you are. I definitely don't follow this rule in California!
