Staying Cool the Appropriate Way!

College is all about being able to take care of yourself and make your own choices and decisions. It is about learning and expressing yourself. But, even with all of that freedom, it is still important to make appropriate decisions in regard to presenting yourself.

Because it has been so beautiful and downright hot recently, it has definitely brought out the sun dresses, shorts, and tanks a lot earlier. I personally love it. I love summer clothing because of the bright colors, more comfortable fits, and a much more relaxed feel. However, when I dress for class I keep in mind that other people are around me including professors, deans, faculty, staff, etc. This means that I don't wear super short-shorts, tube tops, or low cut/revealing items of clothing.

I say this because when it is hot, you want to wear as little as possible, but I have noticed that the weather has people dressing inappropriately on campus. The other day, I saw a girl walking through the halls of one of the buildings and she had a camisole on (you know the ones with the built in bras), and denim shorts that were so short, they looked like underwear. It actually made me feel uncomfortable. Now, let me say, I am totally for wearing tanks, norts occasionally, and flip flops to class and on campus... so I figured I would put together some Polyvores on how to dress for class and stay cool at the same time.

  1.  If you want to dress down, a tennis skirt is a great choice. It's airy and breathable, but still looks put together.
  2. If you'd like to wear shorts, try going with structured shorts, like  J. Crew's chino shorts. Lands End, L.L. Bean, and Ralph Lauren are also great places to find structured shorts. Chambray is a great material because it is light and breathable. I try to avoid overly fitted items because I feel like it constricts me in the hot weather.
  3. A simple shift dress is also a great choice. No sleeves, cut short, and airy. Flip flops are always my shoe of choice over cowboy boots or flats because they are easy to throw on and keep me a lot cooler.
What do you wear to stay cool? Do you agree that super short-shorts and tube tops are inappropriate for a class setting? Have a fabulous day, stay cool!
Yours,
sCe

Totally agree, try teaching high school when it gets warm out. Makes me super uncomfortable.

I feel the same way about people's outfit choices at VCU! Sometimes I want to pull them aside and ask if their mother knows what they chose to wear to school. I try to stick to the fingertip rule from non-uniform days in high school, and if I feel at all uncomfortable or too revealing (which is rarely) I change. I don't want my professors or anyone else thinking less of me! I'll stick to my Norts for now! Have a great day!

AMEN! I always HATED when I saw girls with their completely inappropriate booty shorts and tank tops sitting in class. I always wonder what their thought process was as they got ready for class in the morning.. blows my mind!

I totally agree that baring everything for class is completely inappropriate for the classroom setting. You can easily be cool and look put together! Your outfits clearly show this.

I find that wearing loose fitting shift dresses are so much more comfortable than tight fitting super short shorts and tank tops.

It's funny you posted this. I have so many shorts, but feel uncomfortable wearing them to class because I feel they are too short and not suitable for classroom. I went today and bought some really cute shorts that are longer and look fab.

In the summer I become shocked at what people think is ok to wear!
