Camel Coats to fit Every Budget

I have had a thing for polo coats for forever. I specifically remember one of the first times being Home Alone (favorite movie ever) and the mom wears a camel coat in several of the scenes. I've also spotted several photos of Jackie O donning a camel hair polo coat, too! If you aren't familiar with a polo coat, it is the style of coat that got its name from English polo players. They used to wear the coat as they rode horses when the temps took a dip!

As the coat became popular in fashion, it became more fitted and was usually double breasted. It's a unisex piece, although it has a menswear vibe, which is one of the reasons I am drawn to it. Today, it has been re-invented by designers all over and has gained a lot of popularity in the past few years. It is often referred to as a camel coat not only because of the color but because a classic polo coat is made from camel hair (sometimes mixed with cashmere) and topped off with horn buttons.

This is, without a doubt, a classic staple for both men and women. It has been around for years and will never go out of style. It drapes elegantly and provides warmth, which are two of the reasons I love my camel coat so much. I also love that with a traditional camel coat, you can wear it with jeans, but it also works with a little black dress. It's the perfect coat for a sophisticated young professional!

While the coat I have comes back in stock each year, I realize it is awfully pricey and may not fit everyone's budgets, so I've found so many different options for your to browse that fall into different price ranges. I even found an option for under $100. When buying a coat that I'd like to have for years to come, I always pay attention to the fabric. You want to look for something made from at least 100% wool), but a wool cashmere blend is even better (although usually pricier). I love the look of a 100% cashmere coat; and the way it drapes is incredible, but since cashmere wears quicker than wool, it's better for longevity if you get a wool/cashmere blend! Like cashmere, camel hair is usually very pricey and also hard to come by. Wool versions, though, are everywhere if you keep your eyes peeled!

I like to wear mine with all black-- I think it's simple and chic. I love seeing the super fashion forward women style it on Pinterest with Stan Smith's. I have a pair, but am not so sure I can pull it off! I also love camel with a darker gray.

Here are my favorite pins for inspiration: 1// 2// 3// 4

Fit tip: My coat is rather long. I am 5'6", so if your shorter/petite, I would suggest choosing a shorter style coat to work with your frame. Sometimes tailoring works, but it's even better when the coat starts out shorter! Have a fabulous day!

Your coat is so drool worthy! I think I'm going to have to save up for the real thing, I don't want to settle! Also agree, 100% wool or wool-cashmere blend is the way to go!

Hi Sydney,
That coat looks beautiful on you. Can you give size advice for the Brooks Brothers coat featured at the top of your post? This is the one and only item on my holiday wish list and I want to make sure I give my husband the correct size. I am a full 34 bust. I am wondering if I should go with the size 4 or 6. Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi Christina! Thank you so much! To give you an idea on sizing, I am wearing a size two. I think the coat runs generously, so if you are between sizes, size down. I'm about 5'6" and 125 pounds with a 27 pant size and a 34 bust, so we may be similarly sized! Hope this helps!
