The Real Real: A best kept secret

The Real Real: A best kept secret

I have mentioned The Real Real in past blog posts, but I have never done a full post about the website! I think it's one of the best-kept secrets. Whenever I mention it to someone, they have usually never heard of it.

It's no secret that I am a big fan of designer shoes and accessories. I'm not someone who has shelves lined with shoes and handbags, rather I select very carefully and only invest in a few designer pieces each year. They're typically classic and well-made and in neutral colors that I know I will wear for years to come!

As much as I buy designer items from places like Neimans, Nordstrom, their respective boutiques, etc. I have also found great things second-hand! I actually bought my first Chanel bag off Fashionphile (which is a similar site to The Real Real). I think The Real Real is much better in terms of customer service, pricing, and selection, though.

I'm not a huge fan of buying things like sweaters second-hand, for some reason that weirds me out. However, I think things like jewelry, coats, shoes, and handbags are all fair game. The Real Real has all of that and in abundance (this is not sponsored). Plus, a lot of the listings are new with tags.

And the best tip is to find what you want on The Real Real that you would have bought elsewhere, buy it and then take the money you saved and put it into your savings account. You're still splurging, yes, but it is also a way to save a little bit! Oftentimes, with The Real Real, you'll save hundreds of dollars, so it's certainly worth it.

This is not like eBay where you can bid on items. The shopping experience is just like that of shopping on a website like Nordstrom. You just pick a category and scroll through. You can sort by brands, prices, sizes, etc. The price that is listed is what you pay. Although they often have coupon codes or sales! I suggest sorting by your size, though in all of the categories.

If you have never shopped The Real Real before, I recommend creating an account because you can 'favorite' items. They often go on sale and that way you can keep an eye on the price and prioritize the items that you want! If you use this link, you'll get $25 off your first purchase

Today I thought I would share pieces that I see on The Real Real that I already have and love. A lot of these pieces I have had for years and are in constant rotation in my closet. They're classic and in my opinion, worth it!

If you see an item that you love and absolutely have to have, my suggestion is always to buy it immediately. Things sell out really quickly.

If you are unsure about an item or it's too expensive, add it to your wishlist and it might go on sale or you might end up changing your mind and you can buy it later if it has not been sold. My thoughts are if it sells, it just wasn't meant to be anyway!

One last tip: If the item is priced very close to its original price, then that item is more than likely extremely popular right now or it is a classic from the designer so it holds its value.

Even if an item is in perfect condition, it could be deeply discounted, which is great, but that also sometimes signals that it is out of style or not a classic from the designer. If you pay attention to the resale designer world, you'll notice that there is a definite cycle and even if you don't shop resale, you will get a clear picture of what designer things are trending out of style.

Things like Rockstuds, which were a huge hit for Valentino in the past years are popping up left and right on The Real Real in abundance for a very discounted price. This shows that they are becoming 'out of style'. Things like Chanel ballet flats in classic colors and Goyard totes are much harder to come by (and are usually never discounted by a ton) because they are a brand classic and don't go out of style.
