How to Style a Slip Skirt

Lace Cami// Leopard Slip Skirt

Happy Friday! I hope you all have some fun things planned for this weekend. Tonight we are headed out to dinner and a fun concert downtown. We have been having such great weather lately so I fully plan on soaking up the last bit of summer sun as it is the last weekend the pool is open!

Now onto today's post... let's chat slip skirts. I had been seeing slip skirts and dresses around for a while now and I had convinced myself that they were not for me. But, when I saw this leopard slip skirt, I couldn't resist and my curiosity got the best of me!

Well, I am so glad I tried it out because I love love love this slip skirt! It's the perfect thing to throw on and feel fancy without actually looking overdressed. It totally makes the perfect date night outfit. It's a bit youthful and trendy if you pair it with a lace cami like I did but also looks great and more modest with a drapey cashmere cardigan.

While I'm not much of a trend follower, I definitely think that the way I styled this slip skirt skews more classic than trendy! You'll be seeing me rocking this all fall season!

Thank you to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post. All opinions are my own.

This has been such a smooth week! Knock on wood, but things just went so swimmingly and I got so much done. I'm so excited about fall because there is so much going on! This is the last weekend that our country club pool is open, so I know we will be soaking up the weather and last bits of summer!

Not only did I tackle a ton of to-do items, but I also tackled some house things as well as wedding things. It has me feeling so good heading into the weekend. I have been indecisive when it comes to house things and I have finally made a few decisions. I've also been procrastinating some of the menial wedding tasks and finally decided to tackle them.

This week I also received so many amazing fall pieces and this cool weather we have been having (which is amazing!) allowed me to wear some of them! I'll definitely be sharing them with you in the weeks to come!

Wearing: The outfit you see above is such a simple look and easy for early fall when it is still really warm out! The white peplum top is lightweight cotton so it is basically a 'fancier' version of a long sleeve tee!

Eating: I just got a wedge of Port Salut cheese for the first time and you guys...this might be my most favorite cheese ever! It's super creamy like a really good brie, but the flavor is much milder. It's just really easy to eat and spread and it pairs so well with anything on a charcuterie board! I think it would be fabulous with an olive tapenade, or prosciutto and melon or peach, and it's so great paired with the Trader Joe's fig and olive crisps and bubbly. If you can find a wedge of this, snag it because it is my newest favorite.

Drinking: Love this article from Town and Country where they share tasty apple cider cocktail recipes. Count me in!!

Reading: I have a question for all of you! Do you have any book recommendations that are similar to The Nightingale?  I loved it SO much and would love to read more similar books! I have already read All The Light We Cannot See and Once We Were Brothers- both are similar and I would highly recommend both but if you can think of any others, let me know!

Sale-ing: There are so many good sales happening since this is a holiday weekend so I am going to create an entire blog post and post it on Saturday so you can see all of the sales, discount codes needed, and my favorite picks from different retailers!

AMAZED at this cute little 4-year-old cheerleader. I was a cheerleader in middle/high school and I'm still into watching cheerleading videos to this day. This little girl is amazing and not only are her moves great but the fact that she nails the choreography is amazing for how young she is!

Listening: I just started my fall playlist if you want to follow along as I add to it!

Loving: OMG. This Hudson Bay doggy coat is the CUTEST THING EVER. Henry has a raincoat and a Barbour-style coat, but I might just have to get him this.

Wanting: This coat
is truly everything. Timeless, preppy, sophisticated, and functional. What more could you ask for in a coat?!

Pittsburgh-ing: I hate to be the bearer of bad news if you haven't heard this already, but the Farmer's Almanac is apparently predicting a 'Polar Coaster' in Pittsburgh. Which sounds awful. Lots of snow and colder than normal temperatures. I am not here for this AT ALL. Hopefully, the prediction is wrong!!

Traveling: Next up, I'm headed to Nashville for one of my sorority sister's weddings! I cannot wait!!!

Wedding Wednesday: Bouquet Inspiration

Wedding Wednesday: Bouquet Inspiration

Wedding Wednesday: Bouquet Inspiration

Today I wanted to share the inspiration behind the type of bouquet I would like to carry for our wedding! I mentioned in the Q+A last week that flowers aren't necessarily something I am placing that much time and emphasis on! I love flowers and think anything looks great, plus hiring a great florist means that I get to just let them work their magic.

Meghan Markle's bouquet and Audrey Hepburn's bouquet from Funny Face are two of my biggest inspirations. I love how understated, simple, and classic they look. Plus, they do not take away from anything else.

I've learned that this type of bouquet is commonly referred to as a 'nosegay' in the floral world! I've actually had a hard time finding examples of this type of bouquet on sites like Pinterest. I guess they just aren't popular/common right now but I'm happy to do something a slightly different!

Everything You Want to Know About Lake Pajamas

Shop Lake Pajamas:

How thick are they? Are they too hot for summer? Is the fabric see-through?
They are thick in that they feel like a quality set of pajamas. But they are lightweight so you can easily wear the short-short set in the summer or if you get hot at night. Cotton is breathable and the perfect fabric for sleeping. You could wear the long-long to bed in the winter if you get cold and it is great! In the winter, if I'm wearing them to lounge, I might wear a sweatshirt and slippers or robe overtop for more warmth. The fabric is not at all see-through.

Are they worth the cost?
Something being 'expensive' is very subjective. I personally love pajamas and only really wear nice, matching sets of pajamas to bed. So I think $75-$100 for a set of pajamas is the going rate at places like Shopbop, Nordstrom, etc. Of course, you can also find great pajamas at places like Gap and Target for $20-$30. I think it all just depends on how you shop and what you like to wear to bed. I know a lot of people who wear men's boxer shorts and old sorority t-shirts to bed and that's totally fine, too! Whatever works for you and your budget.

I personally think they are 100% worth it.

Have you tried the dresses?
I haven't! I like to wear little slips while getting ready for the day or night, but I don't personally like to sleep in dresses. I have a few nightgowns but they just don't get as much wear compared to shorts or pants. I also wouldn't spend much on a dress like that because I don't really find lounging in little slip dresses to be all that comfortable. I do think they are cute, though! I see Lake style their dresses (and other pajamas) as 'outfits' that you could wear outside of the house running errands or whatnot, but I'm not down with that. I personally wouldn't even walk Henry around my block in them. They are pajamas and look like pajamas. I can, however, see one of the dresses being worn as a swimsuit coverup!

Do you have a favorite style?
Yes! I love the short-long. I think choosing a style is totally a personal preference. I wear the short-long year-round and I think they are more modest than the shorts if you are wearing them around other people (like in a vacation setting or something because the shorts are kind of short). The long-sleeve tops are not really 'long'. They're like a 3/4 sleeve and I really wish they would make a full-length sleeve.

Do you know if they ever have sales?
Yes, they do! They just had one a few weeks ago and I know they typically have a Black Friday sale. I follow the brand on Instagram and that is usually where I see the sale announcements. This summer's sale was good, but the sets were not deeply discounted like the Black Friday sale. When they have a sale, you have to shop VERY fast because the sizes sell out so quickly. During Black Friday, I got a short-long set for $52, which is 50% off! I quite literally got online at midnight to order so I was able to get my size!

How do you wash them? Can you dry them?
I wash mine with things like bras and underwear. Delicate and on warm. Their website says 'cool', but I don't find that necessary. See below where I talk about fit to learn more! I saw someone send in a question about the colors fading, I can't speak to that because I have not noticed colors fading at all. I would imagine if that is an issue, washing on cold with delicate items and laying dry like the Lake website suggests would be the way to make sure that fading doesn't happen.

Customer Service
I have never had a customer service experience with them before so I can't speak to this! I would imagine (and hope) that they have great customer service- they better if you are spending $100+ on pajamas!

How do they wear after they are washed? Do they hold up after a lot of wear? Do they stay soft?
They're SO soft and the best part is that they continue to be SO soft wash after wash.

What is Pima Cotton and how is it different from any other cotton?
I think if buying quality items for your wardrobe is important to you, it's very important to know your fabrics and fibers. Just do a little research or a Google search of the fabric the next time you are considering purchasing an item.

Pima cotton is known as a 'nicer' cotton. You see this material used in a lot of infant clothing because it's soft, smooth, durable, and wrinkle-resistant. Did you know it is best to sleep in cotton? This is because it is breathable and keeps you cool. You should try and stay away from synthetic materials- things like Polyester when you sleep because they tend to trap moisture and heat. If you get overheated at night, 100% cotton pajamas might be the answer for you.

Lake Pajamas is not the only brand that makes pieces in Pima cotton. The Company Store makes sets, too. When you are searching around for Pima cotton, though, make sure it is 100% Pima cotton- I've seen blends that are just worthless. Roller Rabbit also offers some of their sets in Pima cotton (note: not all of them) and you can see me wearing the sets in the photos above. I haven't tried The Company Store, but I do have some Roller Rabbit sets that I love, but I prefer Lake over Roller Rabbit if I had to choose.

Lake also makes other fabrics, but I only really care for their Pima cotton sets!

How would you say they run in terms of sizing? Length? Are they fitted?
Lake Pajamas are not fitted. They are not particularly stylish and definitely not sexy. They are meant to be looser and comfortable. I would say the sizing is true to size if you like your pajamas loose. I have both sizes small and medium. I typically buy my pajamas a size up from my usual clothing size. I usually wear a small so sometimes with pajamas, I will get a medium because I prefer a looser, roomy fit. With Lake, they are true to size, but if you buy your true size, I would suggest never drying them in the dryer. They will need to lay flat to dry. This is because anything 100% cotton will shrink if you machine dry it! I personally find that they shrink more in the length than anything else.

Before machine drying, the length (in a size small) is great for me at 5'6"- if you dry them, they'll likely be a great length for someone 5'4" and under. I dry all of mine and so the pants are more like ankle length once dried. I don't particularly mind it. I have also purchased the tall and then dried them and once dried, they are the perfect length for me at 5'6"(maybe even a touch long).

I have gotten mediums and they are huge on me at first, but once I put them through the dryer, they shrink right up and are very close in size to the smalls that I own (and haven't dried). So basically, if you want to machine dry them, size up, if you want to lay flat and air dry, get your regular size.

They're honestly not as high maintenance as they sound.

Do you know if they make solids or darker colors?
I have seen some solids in their different styles and fabrics and I have seen some patterns other than stripes, but it seems as though stripes is their thing. I personally love stripes! They have made navy striped sets. I actually have a navy striped set and the stripes are so thin that I would consider the set 'dark'. I wish they would make solid sets, though! A navy set with white piping would be SO cute.

Do you have the robe?
I don't! I wish I did, though, I would imagine it's dreamy. I have 6 robes (ridiculous, I know), so I just can't justify buying another.

Leopard Coats for Fall

As weird as this sounds, this leopard coat has a special place in my heart and I'll likely keep it forever. I bought it the morning I got engaged and ended up wearing it that night when we got engaged! The coat is from last winter (Ann Taylor) so it is no longer available but it was one of my most worn pieces.

I'm so excited to be able to pull it out as the temps start to dip. The print is loud and it makes an otherwise simple outfit a lot more fun! I feel fabulous when I wear this coat!

I thought it would be fun to share some leopard coats that are out this year. They are all different lengths and weights and cuts, but there is something for everyone!

I don't know about you, but since I live in Pittsburgh, coats are not only a necessity but it's sometimes all anyone sees of an outfit so I love to buy coats. I have so many and I love having all of the choices each day. It makes the chilly weather a little better!

I can't wait to wear my leopard coat during the holiday season. I think leopard looks so great with bright red and I also can't wait to pair it with a LBD!
