Twistbands

Have you noticed these different looking hair ties in ponytails recently? I wanted to know what the buzz was all about. Enter Twistbands. They are supposed to be better than the average hair tie and not give your hair a dent.

Well, believe it or not, they actually work. I wore mine out for the night and my hair did not have a dent in it when I took my pony out. They are definitely worth trying out. One Twistband costs less than a coffee at Starbucks! However, with shipping costs, I'd definitely stock up. They also come in 3 and 6 packs which save you money. The only issue I have with them is that they stretch out super fast. I have extremely thick hair and one Twistband kept my hair in a ponytail but it felt loose. So now I wear two to ensure a tight feeling. Have you tried Twistbands? What do you think?

Dresses on the Mind

With lots of events coming up this semester, I have dresses on the mind. From semi-formals to my sorority's formal to fraternity formals, my 22nd birthday (YIKES!), horse races and even graduation, I have way more than several occasions to sport a fancy frock. I have been scouring websites to find the perfect dresses. Here are some I've bookmarked so far... let me know which ones you like!

Valentine's Day/Sorority Semi Formal

I love this one. The neutral fabric is great because it can be worn in fall/winter/spring. Plus the sequined cuffs add a fun touch and a wrap dress creates a flattering silhouette for any figure. I would definitely do a nude pump and a bold lip with this dress!

Senior Reception/Birthday

I love this dress. It could be dressed up or dressed down, worn with or without tights, and is seasonally versatile. Plus the inexpensive price doesn't hurt either. However, I can just picture my mother saying that it looks like a sack dress and she hates when I wear those types of dresses. The ruffles are just too hard to resist though!

Sorority/Fraternity Formal and for Prom goers

Okay, so this dress is totally out of my price range but I just had to include it. I love the blue hue and the cut of the dress looks stunning. I love wearing floor length gowns for both my formal and bEw's formal because honestly, how many times a year do you get to wear a gown? Of course, I'm usually only one of a handful of girls that does this-- most girls wear short cocktail dresses but when most of the guys are wearing tuxes and the title of the event is called "formal" I just can't help but immediately resort to wearing a floor length dazzler.

Sorority/Fraternity Formal and for Prom goers

This J. Crew gown has a much friendlier price tag. I really like dark dresses. Last year for bEw's formal, I wore a black dress and pearls for a classic look.

Semi-formal/ Senior Reception/Birthday

I love this color. This would be so perfect for late spring with a tan! I picture it with gold earrings and a gold cuff and nude heels. Plus, you could definitely re-wear this with black tights and TB flats around Christmas time!

Anything and Everything

I am OBSESSED with the LP Sunshine dress in black garden lace. It is so flattering and the dip in the back is so fun. The silhouette creates a very classic look. Definitely needs to be worn with pearls! I mean this is about as versatile as you can get!

Graduation/Horse Races

Weekend Shots

me and cCm at the Georgetown VV

I posted a little about my trip to D.C. previously, but I wanted to share some other fun shots! We went sight-seeing, we ate great food and did lots of shopping. Of course no trip was complete without a stop to Vineyard Vines. Not to mention a stop at J.McLaughlin where Stephanie at Prepfection and I literally ran into each other! It is too funny that I saw her there because that is where we met back in November!

One night we didn't have reservations and it was getting late. We stayed at the Mayflower and wanted something that we could walk to. Well, we ended up at the Daily Grill. It was fabulous. It honestly might have been one of the best meals I have ever had in my entire life. Not to mention our server was excellent and made for an even better dining experience. If you are ever in the D.C. area, I highly recommend the Daily Grill. There is one in Georgetown and then one near Dupont Circle and they even offer take-out. We got several appetizers and my main course was the Salmon Farfalle pasta. I dream about this meal.

We went to several of the Smithsonians. My favorite is the air and space. As you can see from above, cCm loved it too.

We got a private tour of the FBI in Quantico. It was really need to see the makings of an FBI agent. We even got to do a shooting simulator!

We were major tourists and saw the White House decked out for Christmas. I had to take the requisite picture, I mean when in Rome, right?

Of course no trip was complete without a late lunch a the Tombs. They were also decked out in their Christmas decorations. Where do you go when you are in D.C. ? Have a fabulous day!

Customer Service Dissappointment

Remember at the very end of 2011 I posted about how much I love Gallery Leather's planners? Remember how I said they are the best? Well, they still are wonderful and I do still love the product. While it is wonderful quality, I will not be doing business with them. Ever again.

Here's a little back story. I placed my order on December 26th, fully paid for, but the website said that it wouldn't be shipped until January 6th. Well, my old planner had the future monthly planner so I figured I could hold off a bit. Well, January 6th rolled around and I never got a confirmation e-mail to confirm that my order had shipped. On January 9th, I e-mailed the contact information for Gallery Leather that they had listed on their website. I gave them my order number and asked them if my order had shipped and if not, if it will be shipped that day or tomorrow. I explained that I really needed my planner and was counting on the January 6 ship date.

Let me preface this next part by saying my e-mail was very friendly. All I got back from the company was a one sentence response. Not a hi, not a thank you for ordering, not an explanation but an "Your order has not shipped and should ship Friday". That is an entire WEEK after it was supposed to ship. I wouldn't care so much if this was a piece of clothing or anything else, but this is a planner. Something that I literally plan my life with and absolutely need. I was willing to spare a week without it, but this just made me annoyed.

I promptly replied asking if there was any way to hurry the shipping along because it clearly stated that the planner would be available on January 6th (still very polite). All I got back in response was "I will check tomorrow and see what they are able to do." The woman never followed up like she said so I sent her a follow-up e-mail asking if anything was able to be done about getting my planner to me sooner. There was nothing she could do.

I tried to be patient and hold my tongue.

I waited FIVE more days. Finally I broke and sent another e-mail because I had STILL not received a shipping confirmation. I sent a polite yet stiff e-mail basically saying "what is going on with my order, I am extremely dissatisfied with the customer service I received and the false advertisement of the availability of your product."

All I get back is "your order was shipped out today". That's it. No apology, no rectifying the situation in any way, no saving face. Not even an explanation. NOTHING.

Well I hate to say this, because Gallery Leather does offer a good quality product and I've gotten very used to it over the years, however, I am going to need to find a new planner come 2013. Sorry Gallery Leather but you lost a loyal customer.

Have you ever had something like this happen? Do you shop companies after you read a complaint? Isn't it so disappointing? I felt like I had to say something especially after I wrote such high praises about them previously-- I don't want anyone to think I promote this kind of terrible customer service!! Well, that's my rant for today! I promise no ranting tomorrow!! Have a fabulous day!

New Years Eve Recap

I forgot to bring home the cord for my camera while I was home on Christmas break so I wasn't able to upload pictures until recently. I wanted to share about my New Years Eve experience because it was just too much fun! I packed my bags and headed to bEw's house in D.C. and we then headed to the J.W. Marriott right near the White House with some other friends for a celebration.

I was loving that we got the corner room so we had a huge window overlooking the Willard Hotel.

Getting ready for the countdown. We went to the Mellon Auditorium and it was the best time! I would definitely return next year.

Isn't the venue gorgeous? There were 4 bar areas and then a huge dance floor with many high tables surrounding the venue. Definitely an elegant but super fun event. We also loved that everyone was around our age and there were bands and DJs!

Jack Wills: University Outfitter

As I have blogged about previously, I met my parents in D.C. for a long weekend right after finals week to shop, eat, play. Well, of course we had to do some damage in Georgetown. We went to all the staples, you know, Vineyard Vines, Rugby, Kate Spade, Brooks Brothers and... Jack Wills. I had seen the storefront in August however, I didn't go in. I just spied the Jack Wills adorable navy and pink striped car.

So cute, right?

I didn't know much about the brand, but as soon as I walked into the store, I knew Jack Wills was a new favorite. The store is decorated with a hodgepodge of Rugby themed items and their famous bold navy and pink stripes. There was a huge preppy vibe but on the women's floor, there was also a touch of glamor with lace and sparkly things. The shot glass wall as seen at the top of this post was just a small touch that definitely lent to a university feel. Well, Molly at Jack Wills sent me the most gorgeous blazer... ever. I mean seriously this blazer is the blazer to end all blazers.

These are the buttons. I love that they secretly say Jack Wills but no one else can really tell! This also gives you a close up to the fabric. Nice, heavy wool.

I love that the inside lining is their signature navy and pink stripe. It makes it super hard to resist not to roll up the sleeves.

So fun, right?

My second favorite part is that the underside of the collar is pink! I mean come on, these little details are just icing on the cake!

This blazer is called the Renshaw boyfriend blazer. It seems that it is no longer available on the website, but I'm sure you could track it down in a store if you wanted to. Just from this blazer I can already tell that this is a new go-to shop. The fit of this blazer is outstanding. It is fitted and definitely true-to-size although if you want to wear a super heavy sweater underneath, I'd size up. I'm very impressed with the quality and was pleasantly surprised!

So a big thank you to Jack Wills for helping me to look fabulous in their pink and navy stripes!

A little Summer Wind LOL moment. I wore this outfit on my second day of classes. So they were all new classes with new classmates. Well, this class was at 5:00pm and lasted for over an hour. Previous to heading to class I was snacking on carrots and garlic hummus. Apparently I dropped a big gob of hummus and it fell into my scarf. I had no idea at all and went on my merry way to class. When I walked into class I kept smelling garlic and thinking that one of my classmates had been cooking before they came to class and just smelled of garlic. Well, the smell never went away. When I got home, I promptly changed into workout clothes when I noticed the huge gob of hummus caked into my scarf. It was me that was stinking like garlic. Ew. Apologies to my classmates for having to smell me all class.

So last random thought of this post. I love carbonated drinks. I love champagne, diet coke, gin and tonics, seltzer water, etc. Well, all of those drinks are not necessarily very healthy. I've been cutting back on the diet coke majorly but sometimes I just need something fizzy. Well, I have turned to club soda with a sprinkle of lemonade Crystal light. It makes for a low calorie, delicious drink! Has anyone else tried this? Have a fabulous day!

Crystal Catcher

I have been wanting a valet tray for some time now, however, sometimes they look too manly. This crystal "catch all" is actually a wine coaster that I got from Lenox. However, I saw it as a different purpose. I now use this next to my nightstand at home to house all of the things I like to have next to my bed. It goes really well with the crystal lamp and ring holder so I think it's a winner.

Tried and Buyed?

Recently I've come across several products that I really dislike. I like to hear others opinions on things like this, so here are some things I've tried recently that I would never try again.

Aveda hair products. I really don't like them. I tried them over Christmas break and the Shampure made my hair feel like straw. The conditioner is just as bad and doesn't do much for my hair at all. Has anyone tried this and liked it? The only thing I liked was the smell and even that wasn't that great. Replace this with something else I tried over Christmas break and loved?

L'Occitane Aromachologie shampoo and conditioner. This stuff makes me feel like I am at the spa every time I shower. It smells wonderful, it makes my hair feel soft and smooth and you don't have to use a ton to get that soft feeling.

I don't get the craze. In my opinion, it's not tasty. I'd much rather just drink water and save myself the $4 a bottle.

I love my coffee. Seriously I can't go a day without it. I actually look forward to getting up each morning partly because of my warm coffee (kind of sad, but true). I drink mine black with a sprinkle of Splenda I am a bit picky though. I love a french roast and mostly anything really dark. I tried this Member's Mark (Sam's Club) Espresso Roast because it came in a giant bag. However, I hate to say it, it was no good. It had a weird after flavor that I was not a fan of. However, the french roast is wonderful!

So I might get a backlash from this dislike-- The J. Crew Minnie Pant. After hearing so many rave reviews about the pant, I decided to go into J. Crew. In fact, I had full intentions of purchasing the Pixie, the Minnie, and the toothpick ankle and all I walked out with was 2 headbands. Personally, the toothpick was fine, but I actually found a pair I loved more at Ralph Lauren. The Pixie was basically a legging and I didn't need another pair of leggings. Finally, the Minnie. To me, it was ill-fitting. Of course this all depends on body type. I just didn't think the quality of the pants was very nice and the fit wasn't worth purchasing.

Last First: Summer Wind Reflects

Today marks my last first day of undergraduate classes ever. It is definitely bittersweet, as I'm sure many of you can relate. On one hand I am so proud of everything I have accomplished in the past 3 and a half years and on the other, I am not ready for it to end. I'm not ready to leave my friends, my beautiful campus, bEw, nice and sunny Virginia, and basically my newest place that I call home. It is also scary to think that come May I could end up anywhere in this entire world. I have so many questions like will I move back home to Pittsburgh where all my family is? Will I move to D.C.? New York? Will I stay in touch with all of my friends? Will I graduate with a job in place? Who will I live with? These questions are all clouding my mind on this day and probably until May 5, 2012.

The feeling reminds me of when I was applying to colleges and I had no idea what the next couple of months of my life would bring. I remember thinking how scary it was not knowing what state I was going to end up in and all that picking a college would bring. Thankfully everything fell into place and I don't regret a single thing. Here's to hoping that my "big girl" life will go off without a hitch just like my "college life" did! To all those starting there last first day today, I wish you the best of luck and happiness in these last months of an unforgettable experience. Have a fabulous day!

An Updated Wardrobe: Statement Earrings

With my college graduation just 4 months away, in the wardrobe department of my life I have been focusing on updating. I find myself sporting less bows and a much more sophisticated overall look. I own a lot of business appropriate outfits because I actually enjoy that type of structured, conservative style so I have been adding some jewelry pieces and other accessories that pair well with business-y type outfits. Some things I have been noticing is that I am a little more willing to ditch my pearl earrings for some statement studs. For example, on New Years Eve, I was dead set on wearing my usual pearl studs, however, the dress needed something more. I decided to go with bold gold dangle earrings. Needless to say I've started to collect some pretty earrings for the ~~very short~~ time I'm willing to part with my everyday pearls. These are some statement earrings that aren't too wild or over the top but pair great with a little black dress.

Okay, Okay, so maybe these are a little out of my price range. But oh boy are they gorgeous.

2012: The Year of Graduates

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable New Years! This post was supposed to go live yesterday, however, Blogger decided to malfunction on me. I cannot believe it is 2012. I don't know how 2012 is going to top 2011, but here's to hoping! Something huge about 2012 is....can you guess from the list above???..... that this is the year that I graduate college. Yikes! I am getting too old (cCm also graduates high school this year). I don't have a single resolution for this year-- I've decided that since my resolutions only last a month or so, that I will just continue living my life and doing what makes me happiest and not worry about improving but rather just focusing on the great parts about my life. I'll have to recap my Christmas and New Years when I get back to school because silly me left my camera cord at school. But here are some iPhone pics to hold you all over (since I'm sure you are all so interested hah!).

This picture doesn't do this house justice. It is near bEw's house in Virginia and I have never seen a house so decked out in Christmas lights. It was incredible. I couldn't even stand back far enough to capture the entire lot. The gentleman of the house was outside and was handing out candy canes. He said that they hire 12 people in November and work 12 hour days just to get everything up. Intense!

Mac is so cute when it's cold outside. He loves to snuggle and try to stay extra warm-- he is Australian after all and prefers the hot summers.

I used to play the violin and piano, well into high school even. I practiced a bit and on Christmas Eve, we all sang Christmas carols.

My grammie surprised all of the "kids" with initial embroidered koozies to use on Christmas even. I'm still using mine post-Christmas.

It finally snowed! In Virginia on New Years day I was in a short sleeved shirt outside and this was the day after on my trek back to Pittsburgh!

I made a fun little wine-related craft that I will be doing a post on as soon as I can get my pictures onto my computer!

I got a crystal wine coaster specifically to use as a catch-all on my night stand. It adds a touch of elegance and is perfect!

I have been eating a ton of really good food. Needless to say, I'm going to need to hit the gym asap.

I saw a sorority sister at the NYE event that I attended! I love when I see friends out outside of school!

The Mellon Auditorium was absolutely stunning-- A wedding reception would be absolutely fabulous here. It was all decked out and everyone was in their NYE best!

Oh So Random Thoughts of sCe

Headed to D.C. to ring in the New Year... here is a list of random thoughts...

Wishing I had found this sooner so I could pack it up with me. Also wishing it came in more fun colors (namely pink...a monogrammable version would be nice too).
Something great about packing sparkly things? There's no need to iron them or hang them.
I wish I could read while driving. I can't put down Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.
If I was Harry Potter I could just apparate to D.C. instead of having to drive 4 hours... well, on the bright side, at least there's no Voldemort in this world.
Other than Lady GaGa, who actually buys things like this or this.. I don't know which one is worse...

This Christmas my lips got lucky. I got three new lip products that I am absolutely loving.

I am by no means really into beauty products. I have a strict regimen of make-up and swear by certain products. I really don't ever even try new products because I am so set in my ways. However, it is fun to receive these kinds of things as gifts because they are fun to try-- and I do tend to branch out in my lip selections from time to time. Anyways, I love each of these.

I am obsessed with the Dior Addict-- It may be my new go-to lip product (I was really into lip stains before). This is glossy and adds just enough color. The guy at Dior told me that 612 Spotlight is one of the most popular shades-- It's a little deeper than a nude with just enough sparkle metallic in it to make it shine. Plus, I love that it goes on so smoothly, more like gloss than lipstick.
Tarte Lip Surgence is almost similar to a lip stain but much more smooth-- definitely need a mirror to apply it. "Flashy" is the color I got and it is definitely a pink. Not sure if I would have chosen this color for myself but I don't hate it.
I've been a long time fan of Kiehl's products. I usually use the lip balm and had never tried the lip gloss until I received it in my stocking from Santa. It's a very light, sheer gloss. "Earth Day" is a nice neutral shade. cCm got "black raspberry" and it's a bit of a deeper sheer gloss and I love it as well. You can't go wrong with Kiehl's.

2012 Date Book

With 2012 days away, have you purchased your date book? I have stayed loyal to my absolute favorite date book in the entire world: Gallery Leather. The first year I had ever heard about it was 2008 and since then, it has been my go to date book. I actually found my first one at T.J. Maxx, but haven't seen them there since 2008. Thus, I've resorted to shopping online from their website. They have several different size options and many different color options and they are all bound with leather making them very durable and clean looking. The first year, the one I found at T.J. Maxx was the pocket weekly planner and in high school that was all I really needed. Now that I'm becoming a "big girl", I have been using the Large Leather Weekly Planner. This year, with me being almost on my own, and almost having my very own job (fingers crossed!!), I have decided to order the ring bound planner!

I got this in the exact color above called Orchid, but the color is much more pink in person and less deep than the color in the above picture. I've also had the violet shade which is a really deep purple which is also another great color. I've never seen any of the other colors in person but I'm sure some of them are a bit different from the pictures on the website because the above orchid looks much different in person.

Here are three from past years-- I can't seem to find the last one. Anyways, see how the orchid shade is much more pink? I've added fun stickers but for the one that I just ordered, no stickers will be added since I will have it for years.

The only thing that bugs me about the design is that it has no pockets. I had to construct make-shift pockets because I'm no good without them. I keep extra sticky notes and loose scraps of notes in these little pockets.

This is the month at a glance-- Obviously I never use this section. Seeing my month laid out in front of me is far too overwhelming. I like to take it one week at a time.

This was a slow week for me. It has a thin silk string to hold your place but I use 2 binder clips as well and clip a to-do list on the binder clips so my to-do list doesn't clutter the pages. I love the plain set up. Nothing like the Lifeguard Press agendas that have illustrations and stickers, etc all over. Back in high school, I had a Vera Bradley Lifeguard Press agenda just like the Lilly agendas that they have today and I hated it-- It made me get ADD looking at the illustrations and all the distractions all over the pages. I personally need a clean, open design with nothing but necessity. I also don't like date books that are organized from August to August (school year planners) because unless you are a student or teacher, the rest of the world doesn't operate by semesters so I'm trying to get myself used to January-December schedule before I graduate and move into the "real world".

I can't wait to see the ring-bound one in person (If you can't tell, I get overly excited by organization). I'll let you all know how I like it! What date book do you use? Have a fabulous day! (I was not compensated in any way for this post).

The Mayflower Hotel, Washington D.C.

If you follow me on Twitter, you'll know that after my finals ended, I high-tailed it to Washington, D.C. which is only about an hour and 45 minute drive from my school and met my parents and family friends for the weekend. We do this pretty much every year around Christmas just to sight see and shop and eat. It also gives me something to look forward to while I'm going through grueling finals week (not to brag or anything... but I did pretty darn well this semester ;)!!). Well, we usually try a different hotel every time because we want to experience each one (most my parents have been to in the past so we just rotate). Several years ago we stayed at the Mayflower. I was a lot younger and don't remember it much so I was thrilled to stay there this time around. I love looking at hotel rooms and staying in hotels. I'm not sure why--my parents think I'm crazy for it, but I really do. So if you're into the same thing as I am, this post is for you.

We stayed in one of the suites. To say it was fabulous would be an understatement. The Mayflower is a historic hotel and each room is unique which another fun part about it. Above was the sitting area.

The wet bar was a nice addition and held our beverages and cheese and crackers. I loved that there were two refrigerators (plenty of room for the champagne).

If you are traveling to D.C. and thinking of a place to stay, I wholeheartedly recommend the Mayflower. Our room came with 2 breakfasts included and it was one of the most delicious breakfasts I've ever had. It is served in their main dining room and has everything from fresh fruit to pancakes, eggs benedict and smoked salmon. I don't even like breakfast foods for the most part but I felt like I was in heaven. Not to mention it's close to many attractions such as the White House. bEw and some other college friends met me at my room and we walked two blocks to a bar that a ton of my other college friends were at. I don't think we took a cab our entire stay. Have you stayed at the Mayflower before? What is your favorite part of D.C.?

I love Google Analytics. It is a great tool for anyone with any sort of website and it's also good for college students to get comfortable with because this is something that many companies utilize every single day. In terms of using it in the business world, many inferences can be made through the detailed statistics and information provided through GA. If you have a blog, I highly suggest you check it out!

Tucker Blair: Monkey Belt

If you've been reading Summer Wind for a while now, you may remember this post asking you to vote for the monkey belt on Facebook for the Tucker Blair Belt Design Competition. Well, bEw helped to put my imagination into play because he's the artistic one and we ending up winning! How fun. Well, 7 months later and our belt is finally born!

We wanted to design something fun and something that didn't have too many colors going on so it would match with an assortment of outfits. Plus we wanted a design that was unisex because I know us girls out there like a needlepoint belt just as much as our gents do. It's also so much fun to say, "bEw and I designed that!". Also, along with our design turning into reality we donated $250 to the AACR (American Association for Cancer Research) in the name of one of bEw's very good friends who at 21 years of age was diagnosed. OOTD: $30

Yep, you read the title right, this outfit was only $30. I wore it on Thanksgiving and got so many compliments. Now, the $30 is only for the top and pants, not the jewelry and the shoes, etc... But still, a steal of an outfit if I must say so myself. The pants were only around $10 from Forever21 and I absolutely love them. As I write this post I am even wearing them. I really wish I would have bought at least 5 more pairs because they are extremely comfortable and can be dressed up or down and fit like a glove. I can't find the exact pair in any store or online since I purchased these 3 years ago. I am dreading for the day to come when they fall apart from getting so much wear.

In fact, the only pairs I have ever even found comparable to fit, comfort, and style are these and these and they are 10x the price which I can't bring myself to pay after getting my beloved pants for $10. Ok, ok, I will stop rambling about the pants.

The top is also from Forever21 and I can't remember the exact price but it was somewhere around $20. It looks and feels like a much pricier upscale top. Not to mention it's fun and festive for the holiday season.

I must have had it for a while now because this picture is several years old. I've said it time and time again, Forever21 is a great place to shop for trendier items and things that you will only wear several times and for a really great price.

Tipsy Skipper

Recently, Kearsley, designer and owner of Tipsy Skipper contacted me and introduced my to the brand! I am so glad she did because I am now a huge fan of the newest addition to my shoe collection:

Skipper Skimmers, Key of Sea in Shadow

Aren't they the cutest? I love all of the prints and colors but ended up choosing this pattern with this color combination because it seems the most versatile to me. The gold trim and gold heel are my favorite part-- definitely dresses-up the shoe. They are really unique and super comfortable. For sizing, they run a little big, so I would order down a size.

I am loving the matching tote! Check out the Tipsy Skipper blog which is so interesting. Kearsley designs each print herself and she even did a post on how she designs them. To a non-artistic person this was fascinating to read. Another big thing that I love about Tipsy Skipper is that all of the products are made in the USA.

Here is the owner and designer herself with the Key of Sea in Shadow clutch and flats. I think my favorite thing is that she monograms the clutches-- LOVE! Monograms by Marley Lilly

Marley Lilly of the monogrammed scarf fame, generously sent me a monogrammed pashmina. I chose the forest green color with a gold monogram in the interlock font. I absolutely love it-- it's a fun touch to add to something so practical. This pashmina is just like any other pashmina so it's nice and big and very soft. I paired it with:

Blackwatch Plaid Skirt: Tommy Hilfiger

Scarves and pashminas are a great thing to add to any plain outfit and I really think that the monogram adds a dressier touch. I also plan on wearing this more as a wrap over a little black dress right around Christmas. I think my next purchase will have to be the coral pink color with the key lime thread and a circle block monogram-- definitely a more summer-y mix but would be perfect to wear with a black coat to add a pop of color during the winter months (this would also coordinate with most of my summer wardrobe-- a big bonus!).

I also have my eye on the monogram ostrich clutch. I love the brown, beige, and black--the hardest part is choosing. I'm thinking the beige would go with most everything. However, the brown looks the most luxurious and the black could be dressed up a bit. Decisions, decisions!

Monogrammed Jewelry: Gifting Gold

With Christmas 13 days away (where did the time go!), by now, you have probably read many blogger Christmas wishlists. A common thread that I have noticed is that a lot of bloggers (and even some of my friends IRL) are asking for the popular monogrammed necklace. I'm not going to lie, I have even been dropping hints left and right to bEw about a certain monogrammed necklace that I would just love to own. So hopefully, when Christmas rolls around, I, like many others, will be sporting my new monogrammed necklace (yeah this sentence has a ton of comments...it's been a longggg few days of studying!).

However, one problem I have with the monogrammed necklace is that it has become a "trend". If you look around and do some shopping for one of these pretty necklaces, a lot of websites are claiming that they have been spotted on celebrities and they are the newest, hottest thing, etc. Of course they are trying to make a sale by offering this information but I personally just find it unnecessary.

Monogrammed necklaces have been spotted on many celebrities and gained much popularity in the past year or two. Does anyone remember Real Housewives of Orange County's Alexis getting a very bling-ed out version in late 2009/early 2010?

I would never consider this type of necklace trendy or fashionable (although Alexis' version is just downright gaudy). I have always wanted one of these pretties since I can remember because both my grammie and mother have one and have had them much longer than I have even been alive. It is a very classic/timeless piece of jewelry that is meant to last forever (very similar to a signet ring and is the perfect gift for any woman at any age with any style.

So, if you are gifting one of these monogrammed pieces, asking for one from the man in the red suit, or rewarding yourself, here are some tips to follow if you would like a monogram necklace that is classic and timeless and not just because it is trendy.

If you have a trusted family jeweler, that is your best bet. This will ensure it is made with care and you will be very familiar with the quality. Another plus is that he/she will give you any and all options. This is where my mother and grammie both had theirs made... It does help a little that my grandfather was in the jewelry business so he had a lot of great connections and knowledge.
Choose your metal wisely. Sterling silver, for the most part, is a lot less pricey compared to gold because the price of gold right now is so high. Sterling silver is not made up of all silver because it would be far too soft to create jewelry out of (it's actually 92.5% for all of you familiar with the 925 on Tiffany's sterling silver products). Most other sterling silver products will have the number 925 stamped somewhere on the piece of jewelry... if the 925 is absent from the product, it is likely not sterling silver,
For gold, this gets a little trickier because there are so many different options. Between the karat amount (10k, 14k, 18k,etc) the color (yellow gold, white gold, rose gold), and other options (gold-filled, gold-vermeil, gold-plated, gold-tone, gold-dipped, etc.)

Karats give you an idea of the hardness of the piece of jewelry and the amount of gold in the piece. 24k gold is pure gold. Each time that number lessens, there is less gold in the metal mixture. 14k gold is best for jewelry because it is a decent balance of gold and is not too soft. The higher the karat, the more pricey the piece will be (in most situations). West Avenue offers the option to purchase a solid 14k gold monogrammed necklace.This is a great option if this is a piece that you are buying to last a lifetime.
If $415 is a little out of your budget (it is certainly out of my budget...sorry cCm, you'll have to wait until I get a job!!), then Swell Caroline has a great option for around $160. This time, if you'd like gold, your option is gold filled. Gold filled means that the jewelry is fused with gold on the outside and there is another metal that is the majority of the necklace. It will last if taken care of (don't get it wet, don't let it touch your perfume, don't wear it at the beach or pool, keep it in a covered pouch and don't clean it with anything but a dry cloth). Don't confuse this with gold plate, gold leaf, or gold tone. Gold plate is another metal that is covered in gold but the gold will eventually wear down and the metal will become exposed. This is similar to gold leaf. In gold leaf, the gold will wear down very quickly. Gold tone, is just another name for the color gold. If you read something that is "gold tone" then there doesn't have to be any percentage of gold at all-- basically, it's costume jewelry so don't be fooled!

So, when you shop for a monogrammed necklace, make sure to keep some of this information in mind and shop with a priority. For trend? Or, for a classic piece of jewelry that will last you a lifetime. Have a fabulous day!

Study Break

For all of those whose final weeks have begun, or have just ended, take a break and watch this Christmas classic that is on YouTube in 2 parts.

Once you're finished watching the first part, the link will pop up for part 2. The total thing is about 30 minutes-- a perfect long break. So grab some coffee or hot chocolate and pop in your headphones and watch away. I have found that this is way better than going on Pinterest, reading blogs, tweeting, Facebooking, etc. because it reminds me that it is the holiday season and reminds me what Christmas is all about. It also doesn't take much brainpower at all. Another plus is that you can watch it anywhere-- I may have taken a break right in the middle of the quiet room in the library watching this and no one even knew!
Good luck to all of those who have finals week. I have:

A 10 page paper (this is the one that I've been tweeting about-- it was actually fun to write because it's about Tommy Hilfiger's ad campaign and analyzing it based on certain concepts from the class that I'm in... I got to cite Lisa Birnbach (The Official Preppy Handbook, True Prep) and F.E. Castleberry (unabashedlyprep.com). Sartorially speaking, it's one preppy paper!
A persuasive speech to give (this one is another fun one-- I am giving a speech about my best friend in the entire world: my Australian Cattle dog Mac and why everyone should adopt from shelters!)
A cumulative science final (12 chapters on physics, chem, organic chem, etc. ...this is going to be SO hard-- I am NOT a science person so prayers and well wishes are sincerely welcome!)
A 20 page paper for another writing course that is going to be a killer.
Between all of that, I have to pack, sleep (hopefully), and eat. HELP!

Style Envy

Study Tips a la Summer Wind

It's that time of year again, and sadly, I am not referring to the holiday season. I am referring to a much less exciting time of the year called Finals Week. Having this be my second to last finals week (one thing I am looking forward to be over with) I have come up with some tips that help me make it through and end in success.

My number one rule is sleep. Don't sacrifice sleep. For example, if I were to have an 8am final, I wouldn't stay up studying. Instead, I would get in as much studying as possible but make myself go to bed before midnight. That way when I wake up I will be refreshed and not sleep deprived.
Eat! Just because you are studying doesn't mean you don't have time to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Even if I find myself living in the library I eat before (think oatmeal/eggs/pita&hummus/turkey sandwich). All of those options have a lot of fiber and protein and are extremely quick and easy to prepare. Also, I keep granola bars, almonds, candy, and crackers) The granola, almonds, and crackers to keep me full, but the candy for something to suck on or for a little sugar rush. My favorite candy is Mike 'n Ikes.
Coffee, coffee, and more coffee. I like french roast with a sprinkle of Splenda. It's cold right now so this acts as something to keep you warm but also caffeine. I don't think I could do finals week without it! Sometimes as a break or a treat, I grab a pumpkin spice latte or a hot chocolate at Starbucks because we have a huge one right in the library lobby.
If you have an entry level class with a textbook, your book more than likely comes with some form of online access that has quizzes, virtual flashcards, etc. I know I am in an entry level science course that is required to graduate and our book comes with an online "classroom". The quizzes help me a lot and not only do I learn from taking them but I find out which ones I get wrong and then make an outline for each wrong question. Then, I form a study guide from that. Why waste your time studying everything if you already know a lot. Only focus on what you don't know.
Study with a friend. For some classes this really isn't an option, but if there is going to be a multiple choice test, buddy up with someone from your class and compare study guides or notes. You might of missed something or need something explained in laymens terms.
Take breaks! For every hour of studying I give myself a 15 minute break. Sometimes I will do 2 hours of studying if I am really motivated and then give myself a lengthier break. I will watch an episode on Bewiched on DVD, call my mom to chat, read blogs, snack, take a quick nap, etc. for my break.
Don't Facebook, Pinterest, Tweet, write blog posts, Tumblr. This is a little hypocritical to me considering I am always on social media sites (that is part of my major!) but I try to limit myself-- it only distracts me.
To get yourself to go to bed at a decent time, stop studying, turn off your computer, phone, tv, etc. and read a book for pleasure. It will interest you and give you something to look forward to at the end of the day. Get cozy in your bed, read for about 15/20 minutes and you will undoubtedly feel more tired and be able to fall asleep.
Pick out your outfits. Don't wear sweats. I promise you that this works. Being dressed for success will bring you success. This list is supposed to be for little ones, but I can't say I haven't added these furry pretties to my wish list as well. They are the Lands End Girls Faux Fur Mittens. They are an absolute steal at $24.50. They come in two color options but I prefer the brown shade better. The cream would get dirty quickly and I think the brown looks more luxurious. They also come in small, medium, and large and the reviews say that the large can fit a smaller adults hand!

This is the Juicy Couture Feeling Moody Bracelet. It's $38 and comes in 8 different color combinations. I know when I was little, I love Juicy Couture (although I specifically remember my mother hating it) but it will put a smile on any little girly girl's face. These are also great gifts for the little ones to give their BFF's because each color represents a different attribute.

Any little lady would love a little Lilly to add to her collection. Buy a girl her first Lilly and she will cherish it forever! A really fun idea is when your little one outgrows her first Lilly, place it in a shadowbox and she will have it forever! A fun decoration with lots of nostalgia too!

Show her how much you love her with a Dogeared necklace. These make great gifts and are dainty enough for a little girl to wear. Perfect for the teen girl-- it is a classic piece that she will cherish for years to come.

Shine and Sparkle: Holiday Style Guide

I have received many questions asking how I would style sequin skirts. Right now they are everywhere (see here, here, and here), and with New Years Eve only 26 days away, knowing how to style your glitter can be useful.

Now, I first have to say that there are more ways not to style a sequined skirt than there are ways to style the look. In my opinion, getting a sequined skirt that is too short or pairing it with the wrong thing can give off a very promiscuous vibe and of course, no one wants to give off that vibe (or at least I know I don't want to!).

The first look on the left is the "sexier" version of the sequined skirt. The silk shirt is classic yet the fabric is of equal "dressiness" as the skirt. The suede heels offset the sparkle of the skirt and the peep toe of the shoe with vibrant red toenails add a nice pop of color. I love pairing drape-y silk shirts with over-sized watches. However, when wearing a sequined anything, keep the jewelry to an absolute minimum. Think of the skirt as your piece of jewelry. The earrings and the clutch also add a sleek, more fancy touch.

For the second look on the right, this is something that is more appropriate for less dressy occasions such as a work party or a cocktail party. This look is definitely more conservative with the turtleneck, tights and flat shoes. This keeps the sequined skirt classy as well. Again, I feel the need to re-iterate, keep the length of the skirt in mind! If you have an ounce of doubt that the skirt might be a little on the skimpy side, then don't purchase it. I know Forever21 offers a lot of sequined skirts, however, most of them don't have appropriate lengths.

I would stick to gold, black, and silver toned sequins because it is my opinion that colored sparkles are a bit tacky and look a lot better in small doses. If I had to choose the perfect sequined skirt, it would be this J. McLaughlin number...

Happy December! I thought I would compile several different "gift guides" for everyone and everyone's price range for the holiday season. This one is for the girly girl!

I have been a long time fan of Eliza B. and I really think that the brand embodies what preppy truly is. I have several items on my wish list this Christmas and think these items would make wonderful gifts as well so I thought I'd share:

Eliza B. 1" ribbon headband. Headbands are hard to come by, and preppy ones are even harder. Eliza B. offers so many choices. Plus at $12 each, these are perfect for any age girl on your list. These also would make the perfect stocking stuffer. And moms, if you get fed up by how many gifts your daughter wants to give out (I remember my mom being annoyed that all my friends and I would exchange gifts because it's hard to find reasonably priced gifts in bulk, this would be PERFECT for that... $12 will get your a personalized and special gift for each friend). I personally love the plaid options and then the black and gold Greek Key design... That one can easily be dressed up.

I've posted about Eliza B. watch bands before and how much I love them. They're the same as the headbands. $12 and personalized based on which colors and patterns you choose. I would love to find one or two of these in my stocking! It would make a great gift to get someone a Timex face which you can find very inexpensively and then add a few of these bands and you have a very nice gift!

Eliza B. Ascot Flats. Gorgeous. I would love mine in black with gold piping and then my monogram in gold. So traditional and unique compared to other loafers such as the Steve Madden ones. These are also completely customized which is another awesome aspect. Compared to other loafer companies $12- for these is completely reasonable.

Aside from Eliza B., these dresses are made by Needham Lane and I am obsessed. For $84 you can pick a shift dress in any of these gorgeous fabrics. Perfect for the girl who has everything because you can never have too many shifts! Plus, I love getting summer-y things for Christmas because I put them away and then when I bring them out for summer, it's like getting a present all over again!

This Alesya bag is around $265 so it's a bit pricier to give as a gift but absolutely perfect for a college student or working girl. It's not a purse, it's actually a laptop bag that can not only hold your laptop but also holds other necessities that girls need. That way, you only need this "purse" instead of carrying a laptop bag and a handbag.

This bracelet is from an Etsy seller, Bfrend. She makes the cutest bracelets for a very reasonable price. I really like this Tassel bracelet and it is only $35. Definitely great to give a jewelry lover or great to give many girls on your list because it is a quality product that is inexpensive.

Scout Tote-All Package. So perfect for the college student. Holds keys, money, ID, etc. and is waterproof. Guaranteed to last! Even better, it is only $17! It comes in lots of different colors and patterns so be sure to check out the website. It would be great to get this in the color of her school!

Ban. Do crystal bowtie shoe clips. These show clips add some pizzaz to any of your favorite flats or heels. Definitely glamorous and so fun!

Pearls: Changing It Up

I really don't like necklaces. I am not too into the whole chunky, bib necklace that has been so "in". I never really even purchase fashion necklaces. I really just stick to pearls and classic, simple necklaces. Most of the time, however, I don't even wear a necklace. Sometimes, I will whip out bold pearls such as my 5-strand set from J. Crew. However, you can switch it up with just one necklace!

This is how they normally look. While I love the look of this, it's good to have a change up and sometimes this doesn't go with all necklines.

A simple twist of the pearls and voila! You have a completely different looking necklace that looks much better with the neckline of this button down shirt.

This is a headband found at Forever 21 for $6! However, It doesn't work well in my hair so why did I buy it?

Because I wanted an "edgier" pearl necklace! The gold chains add a little funk to the normal, conservative/preppy pearls.

Hair Care Update

About a month ago, Misikko contacted me about reviewing their HANAir hair dryer. I really like the hairdryer I've had since I was a freshman which is an inexpensive Remington brand hair dryer (we're talking probably around $20-$40 inexpensive). It does the job and hasn't quit on me yet, so I was curious about why this hair dryer is $200.... and that's the very low Misikko price. It's originally over $300. I have been using the dryer for about a month now and I can honestly, truly tell a difference with my hair. Some things I like about this hair dryer (Misikko sent me the dryer, but this is my honest review) :

It is SO quiet. If you have a roommate this is perfect because compared to any other hair dryer, this one is the quietest I've heard.
There are three heat settings which is great because sometimes my hair can't handle extremely hot heat (especially right after my hair has been chemically treated with high lights)
There is a cold option which I had no idea about or why that's good. But after I'm done drying my hair, I'll turn on the cold and it sets my hair...it really does make my hair shinier.
There is a long cord, which is great because I can walk in and out of my bathroom while drying my hair, however, it's a pain to store all of that cord (not a huge turn off though).

I've posted before about my hair, here and here and it is easily the most often question asked by readers. I don't really like using product in my hair at all but Misikko sent me some shine serum and it is SO great. It smells good, is really thin so it's not sticky or heavy. I run it through my hair when wet and then blow dry and I am telling you, my hair is so much softer than ever before. I've used it every day since I've received it.

I was completely skeptical on how a hair dryer could even do anything differently to my hair and how one could be better than the other. The other day I was walking to class and my hair was just so soft, I asked my roommate to touch it and even she agreed that it was softer. bEw even touched it and agreed it was much smoother.

I posted this picture on my blog before, but this just shows how soft and shiny my hair looks. I'm a college student, so I'm not sure that $200 for a hair dryer is in my budget, however, if you have hard to manage hair or very thin hair and can budget for $200, then I can promise you, you will not be disappointed. It will completely change your hair.

This is from one of bEw's recent fraternity date functions. This is my hair after hours of dancing (gross)... but still, look how it shines!

Christmas Wishing

I have been so busy between school, spending time with friends, cooking, cleaning, blogging, traveling,etc. that I haven't had time to create a detailed Christmas wish list. However, that doesn't mean I don't have a fun little list in my head that I thought I would share with you!

Too Faced Neutral Eye palette. My roommate, jSl has this and I have tried it and love it! I don't like wearing a lot of make up but this has a lot of great neutral shades. Most are great for day-wear but a lot you can mix to make it more night appropriate. If you like doing a smokey eye, they also offer a smokey eye palette along with several other themed eye palettes.

The Body Shop grapefruit body wash and body butter. I have never tried either of these products, however, when I was little, we used to have bars of soap shaped like elephants and the soap was this Body Shop grapefruit scent. I am thinking this will bring back memories of being a kid and not to mention it smells wonderful!

Barbour Liddesdale coat. I would like it in black. This coat is fabulous. In black it an be somewhat dressed up or dressed down. The length is a lot longer than waist-length which I love. Plus, you get Barbour quality for only around $150. I think it is really cute when you see couples out both in their Barbours!

KEP Designs B400... If you haven't checked out KEP designs, it is a must. They have gorgeous jewelry. This bracelet is just beautiful!

Kate Spade hand in hand bangle. So cute! Love the saying too! Definitely a great thing to give as a gift as well!

Scout Deano bag in Deaf Leopard. I've posted how I've just recently been introduced to Scout and how much I absolutely love them. Well, I need the Deano added to my collection! I am going to use it for putting all of my damp ski clothing in it apres ski. The bag is waterproof and perfect for just dumping it out into the washing machine when I return home.

Faux fur vest! I have crossed the line from wanting to needing one of these babies. Because I've been at school, I haven't had a chance to try any on but there are a lot of great options at a lot of different price points. Piperlime has some good options along with Nordstrom and Neimans.

Swell Caroline monogram ring. Love love love this. It is so unique and fun! Perfect to give as a gift as well. Very inexpensive and a wonderful, thoughtful present.

Thomas Crown Affair. I first saw this movie last year and love it! I want to add it to my growing collection.

The Bag Lady Papers by Alexandra Penney. This book is all about editor in chief of Self Magazine lost everything to Bernie Madoff. I think this would be an extremely interesting read.

L.L. Bean men's plaid button down. I want it to wear on lazy days. It's over-sized and comfortable but still structured enough to leave the house.

Kate Spade Larabee dot wallet for iPhone. Love this. I've had my eye on this for a while. So functional. Remember it from my post last Thursday?

J. McLaughlin with Jeffrey Banks

Last Thursday I attended the Preppy: Cultivating Ivy Style event at J. McLaughlin's Georgetown store.Needless to say it was fabulous. Not a detail was overlooked and there were lots of people there to mingle with! I even spotted Carly @ College Prepster and Stephanie @ Prepfection. It was so much fun getting to meet bloggers in person and chatting with them.

I got the great pleasure of meeting Jeffrey Banks. He signed my copy and chatted with me for a while while wearing some great J. McLaughlin pieces (for men, I love their gingham shirts).

I loved the tie display. There were so many to choose from. I can't help but to be drawn to ties. The plaid ones were my favorites for this holiday season.

While there, bEw and I ran into some friends. On the left is his roommate from boarding school, W, and to the right is one of our college friends, T, who graduated last year! They had the best time sampling all of the delicious hors d'oeuvres and bEw spent a little time hinting about what he'd like for Christmas.

Speaking of hinting at Christmas. I am hoping that come Christmas morning, one of these pretties will be sitting under the tree!

Another great treat was that they had individual Georgetown Cupcakes for each guest! I had to eat mine almost as soon as I left because it was so yummy!

I also had a great chat with Mr. Steve Siegler. who is the President and CEO of J. McLaughliln. He gave me some more information behind the J. McLaughlin brand. A fun fact is that J. McLaughlin's first store was opened in 1977 and they now have over 45 stores including ones in Palm Beach, Florida and Winnetka, Illinois.

Christmas Wishes: iPhone cases

So I recently converted to the iPhone and have been racking my Christmas list with iPhone accessories. I have a fun blue case that I bought when I got my phone, but I've been searching for something really cute. I dislike the Lilly cases because they are cheaply made and the color wears off. I also think that the monogrammed cases are really cute but they are very similar to the Lilly cases and the color chips. Not to mention that I feel like everyone has the monogrammed case. So here is the top contender on my iPhone accessories list. It's mad by inCase and is only $35! I have never seen anyone with this case before so it's unique but also really cute!

I also want this Kate Spade Larabee wallet to change it up. It's perfect for me because I am always on the go and running errands. Plus, it's nice and small and will fit in most of my handbags.

I also love this Graphic Image leather iPhone case. It's very simple and sophisticated and definitely a quality item that will last probably as long as my iPhone.

This Horchow case is a little on the pricey side, but it is so fun and of course, anything that can be monogrammed is great in my book.

This J. Crew case is very simple but fun. It shows you have a sassy side! The best part is that it's only $25.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it's time to prepare our stomachs for all the food we're going to eat, but also a fun outfit for the occasion. The dress is somewhat casual but I love coming up with clever ways to bring the fall and upcoming Christmas colors into my wardrobe.

I love the outfit on the very right. I have several dressy taffeta skirts and I love to dress them down by pairing the skirt with a plaid button down or oxford cloth shirts and flats. That way, you won't look too overdressed and you can get more wear out of your dressier skirts. I have written about getting plaid shirts and oxford shirts from the boys section of Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren. It's the best way to go because they have the best selection of plaids (way better than the women's sections) and they are also less pricey.

The second outfit from the left is another fall/winter staple look that I love. Pairing a crew-neck cable-knit sweater underneath a blazer is a great way to stay warm and also look put together. My favorite cable-knits are Ralph Lauren. I have several in wool and a few in cashmere-- I find that they are the best fit and have the most diverse selection of colors.

"Scout"ing for Def Leopard

Ta da! My latest fall bag. I've never had a Scout product before but let me just tell you that I am already becoming a loyal customer of Scout because they are PERFECT for all ages.

Seriously, visit the Scout website to see all of the options for anyone! I love the idea of giving Scout bags to your bridesmaids! In high school or college and play a sport? They have a ton of water resistant/ weather resistant bags to choose from that are perfect for sporting events. Love to visit the beach but have kiddos with tons of toys to drag along? Again, Scout to the rescue!

Since I am a college student, I travel a lot. Whether it be back and forth from home or to visit friends and family, I am constantly on the go! Last weekend went away for the night and all I needed was my Scout Daytripper. It fit a change of clothes, my make-up, my dopp kit, a clutch, change of shoes, jewelry, EVERYTHING!

Then, I switched over my school stuff into the Daytripper and I was all set to be on campus for a day of classes and library time.

I also have the Crown Jewels to match! This bag is the perfect size-- it's the exact shape of the Daytripper and weekender just without handles and a lot smaller. This would definitely make a great make-up bag or jewelry travel pouch. I use mine to carry odds and ends in my school bag but for traveling I use it to put deodorant and that kind of stuff.

Not to mention that I am loving the Def Leopard print! SO in and so much fun. The inside of both of the bags are hot pink which add for a a fun touch. This would be such a perfect holiday gift.

My next purchase is going to to be the Original Deano in Deaf Leopard. It will be absolutely perfect for packing ski clothing and accessories. It's so hard to find a huge bag to lug all of that heavy and bulky clothing around. Not to mention it needs to be durable and waterproof. This fits the bill perfectly. Plus, who can beat $35!

VLOG: Reader's Ask Questions

If you've been reading Summer Wind for a while now, then you know that I have been debating on whether or not to try out Vlogging. Well, I've decided that I am going to take the plunge. I love watching other blogger's vlogs and it helps you to get to know the blogger a little better. Fingers crossed I can actually figure out how to even go about getting a vlog onto this blog!

Anyways, instead of doing a typical what's in my bag, or other already set up questionnaire for my vlog, I've decided to turn to you! Now that October is over, there is not really an excuse to have these kind of eyelashes...

Yes that is me, and yes I wore them for Halloween weekend. I had never used false lashes before and got extremely frustrated trying to apply them. However, once I somewhat got the hang of it, it was fun to have them on for the night. I got really dramatic ones from the drugstore because it was Halloween and hey, you can get away with that kind of stuff on Halloween.

But, this has led me to want to try other false eyelashes for dressier occasions. No, no, no, not the Halloween kind, but the more natural kind that all of the celebs wear.

Now that we are officially into November, I feel that it is totally appropriate to start posting about Christmas/Holiday topics. One, because I love anything and everything to do with the Christmas and Thanksgiving season and two, because this is the time when it is most appropriate to dress up wherever you go!

I've blogged about the Etsy store Designs by Kara Kim in the past (here and here) because she made me the most gorgeous gameday dress that has been such a hit during the football season. Well, if you don't know, she has a blog as well and showcases all of her fabulous designs in blog posts. Well, I was reading her blog the other day and just about died over the Madee dress. Nantucket Brand: Review

I wanted to tell you all about Nantucket Brand. They sent me one of their cable knit sweaters to review and I thought this would be appropriate because I've received several inquiries on how to style cable-knit sweaters without looking dowdy. Nantucket Brand has several cable-knit styles. They sent me the cable-knit v-neck sweater to review and it is a great, classic piece for anyone's wardrobe.

I got a size small and it fits me perfectly. It is 100% cotton, 12 gauge cable-knit. The company started out with a store on Main Street in Nantucket and has expanded to online.

I chose "white", however, it is definitely more of a cream/off-white color. It is light in weight-- definitely more of a spring/fall sweater.

Here is a close-up of the bottom of the sleeves and body. The lightweight woven fabric gives it more styling options.

I took the cable-knit and tucked it into a navy J. Crew corduroy skirt and added a belted cow belt to make the look more polished. For shoes, I wore Bass Weejuns. After being introduced to Nantucket Brand, I have now added this little beauty to my wish list:

Houndstooth pea coat. For $89, you can't beat that price for a wool coat!

Hair of the Past

Recently I have been experimenting with my hair. I hate getting hair cuts because it always takes me such a long time to get used to the change in length and how I style my hair. I also want my hair to be as long as possible so getting it cut will only take me a step back. The "bun on the top of your head" a.k.a ballerina bun is really in right now and I've tried in on my hair several times, but I just can't bring myself to walk out of the house with the style yet.
I'm not really a hair person but I've found that if you just blow dry wet hair and pull it back, and throw it into the bun, the hair is a lot more fuller, creating a much larger bun. Hairspray is also your best friend with this 'do. I've also been doing a lot of pony tails a la Serena from Gossip Girl. Her hair looks so great in a slick pony tail and this type of hairdo is great for those mornings when you're waking up late. Other than recent trends, I've been looking at retro images to inspire my creativity. Here are some that I've been loving from Pinterest and Tumblr.

I love the bow pulling her hair out of her face. Very simple and easy to do too!

So Vogue! Love the side pony given a little glamor with the curled ends.

This style is unfortunately only capable with short hair but I love the style!

Another great look-- if you can pull of this hair, you have lots of possible Halloween costumes!

Love this look too! That far-to-the-side part is perfect. If I didn't color my hair, I'd switch my part all of the time, but unfortunately, I keep the same part because that's where my hair gets the blondest. It doesn't help that all of these women are gorgeous too! So how do you style your hair when you are stuck in a rut? When you've pressed the snooze button too many times? I can't remember when or where, but a while ago I saw this on a blog and I thought it was fun! Plus, I figured it would give you more insight to me; especially for my newest followers!

.. I could live anywhere in the US ... Georgetown in Washington, D.C. (hopefully that will happen very soon!!

... I were to have more children ... I don't have any children but 2 would be ideal!

... I could have any talent in the world ... Probably something musical. I love playing the violin and piano but I never kept up with it!

... you met me in real life ... you would probably think I am a neat freak and plan-aholic; I can't stand when my room is a mess and I always have my planner with me!

... I went back to school ... Luckily, I'm still in school until May 2012!

... money were not an object ... I would have several houses. One in the west for skiing, one on a beach for bronzing, one in the the city (NYC/DC), etc. I'd also travel anywhere and everywhere and probably be a frequent visitor of the Greenbrier. Not to mention the extensive wardrobe I'd have.

... I could meet one celebrity ... it would probably be Gwenyth Paltrow. She's gorgeous, she's got style and her husband is a musical genius.

... I could only shop at one store for the rest of my life ... Brooks Brothers.

... I could choose an animal/pet ... a penguin or a giraffe!!

... I could go on a trip right now ... I would plan a week in NYC to stay in the presidential suite at The Plaza Hotel and have spa appointments, shopping trips and restaurant reservations.

... I had to choose between a house cleaner and a personal chef ...I would definitely choose a personal chef. I hate cooking and I am not good at it either-- I see cooking as a burden to my day. I love to eat out or have other people cook meals for me. Definitely not a house cleaner because I love to clean (so weird, right?).

Well, it's time to start preparing those lists and be extra nice, because Santa is watching! With the holidays coming, you have to have something to wear, right? Here are some of Summer Wind's Holiday 2011 picks for a very merry party!

Gap Kids. If you don't have a lot of curves and wear a 2 or 4, this is an option. I have said in the past that some of my prettiest dresses/skirts have come from Gap Kids (and if you're on a tight budget, this is the way to go).

Kate Spade.I really don't like how KS paired this dress with pink tights. I think the look is a bit odd-- No tights or plain black would look much better.

Forever 21. So perfect if you have tons of occasions to go to, but also perfect for a college budget!

Another Forever 21. So girly and cute! Because of the color and fabric, you could wear this all year long.

Who could resist this Designs by Kara Kihm McCarrick Holiday Shirt. I picture it with lots of pearls, black skinny pants and gold flats. So perfect for a more casual holiday party. You could really dress this up though with a full, floor length black skirt; very elegant and classic.

Elizabeth McKay Oscar Dress. Such a gorgeous dress. Maybe I am biased thought because I love anything navy blue.

Falling for Fur

After being in Pittsburgh this past weekend, I've realized that summer is gone. No more walking around without a jacket, no more sandals, and no more run-out-of-the-house-with-wet-hair. So now I just have to embrace the cold. How? Well with these beauties...

I couldn't leave you all without pictures of the shopping this past weekend. The highlight of the visit was seeing the Brooks Brothers concept store on M Street. It is the most gorgeous store I have ever walked into. I think I even like it better than the flagship store in NYC. It was tastefully decorated (but could you expect anything less?).

Isn't this chandelier gorgeous? I want one for my house at home... I'm thinking it may just look a little out of place in my college townhouse...

I loved that they had a pool table in the middle of the bottom floor!

Loved the little girls displays! They were too cute-- I wish they made everything in adult sizing!

Another shop we stopped in: Sterling and Burke whichoffers luxury leather items. We stopped in not only to see the gorgeous store but bEw's roommate from boarding school's parents own it and he wanted to stop in and say hi. Tasteful doesn't even begin to cover the gorgeous store. Every inch of the store was decorated-- very understated but very well done. Definitely worth stopping in if you're ever in the area.

I couldn't help but to snap pictures of the beautiful leather products. I would love love love to own a handmade jewelry trunk!

To end the weekend we took a fun boat ride on the Potomac. It took us from Old Town Alexandria into Georgetown where we had lunch at Clydes and did a little more browsing.

Of course, boys being boys, we had to find a bar to watch the Redskins game (of course I was outnumbered and didn't get to watch the Steelers!). Rugby Cafe was the perfect fit... I loved the way they presented their menus!

Weekend Wonders

This weekend I was so busy I don't even know where to begin!Friday bEw and I drove into DC and stayed at his house for the weekend!
First we met some of bEw's friends at Policy for a drink. It was a really neat atmosphere but we left after one drink because it was a little too wild.

We headed into Georgetown for Friday night and stopped into Mr. Smiths, the piano bar, and had fun singing a long to a lot of good songs. Then we headed over to The Guards to meet up with my bff from high school, eFm! I was SO happy I got a chance to see her! Then we ended the night with pizza at Avocado... we just stumbled in and ordered but once I tasted the pizza, I was in heaven! It tasted just like my favorite Pittsburgh pizza place-- I couldn't believe it!

The piano player at Mr. Smiths was great. He played everything from Dixie Land Delight to Frank Sinatra!

The next day we shopped Wisconsin and M. I pretty much wanted to buy everything in every store. bEw loved the Vineyard Vines whale heads and wore it around for a good 20 minutes.

Taste of Georgetown was going on and we had to check it out so we headed over to the booths and tasted some awesome stuff. One ticket got you one tasting and the tastings were very generous. My favorite tasting?

Serendipity's frozen hot chocolate! So yummy-- it almost tasted like a chocolate milkshake but something was different about it and I can't put my finger on it!

The best part of Taste of Georgetown was the wine/beer/liquor tasting tents. It was fun to sample different things that you wouldn't normally buy/order.

But, all in all, the best part of the day, and really the entire weekend was being with so many fun people!

That night, we had dinner in Old Town Alexandria and then went back to Georgetown for another night out. We started off at Rugby. I always love visiting Rugby-- the decor is super preppy. I wore my Annie Griffin dress and got tons of compliments. I think I need to get another one of her pieces. After Rugby, we headed to George for a drink. I really liked that atmosphere as well.

If you haven't heard of Steve Moakler, then you're in for a real treat. I absolutely love his music and have for so long! I first fell in love with him when I heard "Stay Sound". It was one of his first songs and I still love it to this day.

I was lucky enough to be able to meet Mr. Moakler himself because he played at one of my best friends graduation parties in 2007 (he's really handsome!). Well, I just had to blog about him because of his song "This Ain't Rock 'n Roll".

BFF, lMe, just introduced me to this song because she said as soon as she heard this song, she thought of me.

Well, lMe was too right. This song is great and it describes a lot about me! I'm not surprised though because he went to a rival high school and then moved down to Nasville. Just like me (except I'm in Virginia, not Nashville)!

You've seen it all over the blogosphere, all over Tumblr, Pinterest, magazines, celebrities, runways, etc. The animal print trend is everywhere. From handbags to shoes. Now, if you're not wild for the trend, which I'm not exactly the biggest fan, try it in smaller doses...

Betsey Johnson really does the animal print justice in her watches... This is a great way to add the trend without it being over the top or too loud.

Tommy also dabbles in the animal print watch. While, Betsey definitely does it best, at least you have brand options.

Not a watch person? (shame on you!!)... Vince Camuto offers some leopard for your wrist minus the time.

But if you can't bear the thought of wearing leopard out of your house... then try it with your PJ's. Vicki's has quite the selection..
