As a Pittsburgher, I get extra excited when the U.S. Open comes to Oakmont. It’s only been held there three times in my lifetime—1994, 2006, and 2016. But this year marks the 10th U.S. Open at Oakmont, more than any other club in the country. Even more exciting, this year’s tournament, held June 9-15, is the 125th U.S. Open. A milestone event, at a historic course, right in our backyard.
Pittsburgh really does get to host some incredible experiences, and this is undoubtedly one of them. I’m also already looking forward to the 2026 NFL Draft, which will be held right here in the city. Sometimes I give Pittsburgh a hard time, but moments like these remind me what a special place it is.
I’ve especially been rooting for Neal Shipley this season. He’s from Mount Lebanon—my hometown and high school—and also went to James Madison, where I did my undergrad. He didn’t qualify for the Open this year, which I know was a disappointment to so many of us here, but it’s still so wonderful to see him representing Pittsburgh on the national stage. We’re all cheering him on, always!
I love a good golf tournament—especially one I don’t have to travel for. It’s something my husband and I really enjoy doing together. He’s a big golf guy and jumps at any chance to get out on the course. I got him tickets as a birthday gift this year—his birthday is today, so feel free to send him some birthday wishes!
Oakmont Country Club is located northeast of the city, and without traffic, it’s about a 25-minute drive from downtown. Funny enough, I’ve been to almost every country club in the Pittsburgh area. Growing up, my sister and I swam competitively for our club and traveled to others for meets. She also played Junior Golf, which meant I often tagged along to courses with her. Then after college, I worked for a luxury event planner and was at a different club every other weekend for weddings. I definitely have my favorites, but Oakmont is beautiful, historic, and classically Pittsburgh.
Let’s not forget the fashion!!! Dressing for golf tournaments is genuinely so fun. Once you’re at the course, half the fun is people-watching. I love seeing all the chic and sporty looks. I especially adore Meredith Scheffler’s style (Scottie Scheffler’s wife, if you’re unfamiliar). She’s always so polished and has the cutest, most classic outfits. I’m sharing some outfit inspo in this post if you’re attending the U.S. Open, or any golf tournament, but if you’re in the mood for more, look up Meredith’s past outfits. You’ll love her style.
A few tips! Be sure to check the bag policy before you go. It varies from event to event. Right now, Oakmont is allowing either a 6"x6" handbag or a 12"x12" clear bag, but definitely confirm that before you head to the course.
If you're coming from out of town, pack a sweater! June weather in Pittsburgh can be so unpredictable. We’ve had a stretch of chilly days recently, and it wouldn’t surprise me if we needed a light layer for those early morning tee times.
I've had a few friends ask me what to wear, and how I describe it is casual and comfortable, but polished. You'll see it all at any golf tournament, considering there is usually no official dress code for spectators. As a spectator, many people wear golf clothes- men wear shorts and a golf shirt, and many women wear the typical skort and polo combo, but many women also opt for nonathletic clothing. You can (obviously) wear whatever you want, but I tend to dress sportily, not literally in an outfit I would wear if I were actually golfing. I also pick out my outfit with sneakers in mind because there is a lot of walking! Many country clubs have dress codes, which, again, you usually do not have to follow as a spectator of a tournament, but to be respectful, I try to dress with those in mind. To me, this means no jeans, no flip flops, nothing overly short, men tuck in their shirts, etc.
I recommend sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat. Oakmont does not have much shade, as it was originally designed as an inland links course. They added a bunch of trees at some point, but they have removed many over the last 30-ish years, so if you are sensitive to the sun, dress accordingly!
Linen Dress (on sale)// Striped Cardigan (use code SUMMERWIND10)
A linen dress is always a great idea if the weather is very hot, since linen is breathable and light!
I love green and white, it's such a classic color combo, and you're sure to snag a great photo with the green course as your background! A longer dress is nice to keep your legs from the sun!
I love this denim dress, but since it is made of denim, it is not as breathable as something like linen. This is what I would wear if it was a cooler day!
This is more casual than I would tend to go as I prefer to wear a dress, but this is a great option if you prefer shorts for comfort!
White Dress (on sale)// Crossbody Bag
If it's a nice day, I will consider wearing this! It's comfortable and looks nice with sneakers.
