I saw a snippet of Mel Robbins' podcast on social media recently, and it stopped me in my scroll. The episode was all about manifestation and how we can literally rewire our brains to help us get what we want in life. One of the key takeaways? The power of writing things down. Mel and her guest (a Stanford neurosurgeon) emphasized how the physical act of writing activates parts of the brain that help us focus, retain, and bring our goals to life.
Which brings me to today’s blog post topic: desk supplies and paper products.
It may be 2025, but I’m admittedly a dinosaur when it comes to this. I still use a paper calendar. I love the convenience of my phone notes, and syncing a digital calendar is a must for certain things, but when it comes to actually getting things done, nothing compares to putting pen to paper. If I physically write something down, I am infinitely more likely to remember it. This is something I've known to be true since I was in college. I remember rewriting notes in different colors because it helped me study, and then I was able to visualize the material when I was taking a test. I guess, in a way, I was somewhat manifesting a good test score!
There’s also something deeply cathartic about writing by hand. My job is so screen-heavy with emails, editing, social media, and more that I find peace in jotting down a to-do list or notes in a beautiful notebook. It’s like opening a window and letting in fresh air... for my brain.
And maybe it’s just me, but there’s something about this time of year. Literally, the scent in the air, the hum of the evening cicadas, and the August light have me feeling those ‘back-to-school’ feelings. Even as an adult, I crave that feeling of a fresh start.
If you, too, love paper products and writing things down, I am sharing some desk things that turn mundane tasks into moments I look forward to.
Because, as Mel Robbins reminds us, writing it down isn’t just helpful. It’s transformational!
The two calendars you see above are what I'm using right now. The 2026 is pictured because 2025 is already in use! The Desk Calendar Book is more of a true planner with a spread for the month, and then each two-page spread after that is broken down by days of the week. I'm really only using it for the month-at-a-glance part. It's so pretty on my desk and easy to toss into a tote. The Monthly Wall Calendar is what I use as a desk blotter. I put high-level things on each day, and there is plenty of space for writing. I also love that there is a notes section to the right of the calendar, and each month is beautifully illustrated. I manually sync both of these, which is double effort, but it really works for me. I've been using the Monthly Wall Calendar for about 10 years. It is the best and my go-to! My code for Simplified (desk calendar) is SYDNEY20, and my Rifle Paper code is SYDC20.
