Shop the Skillets:
With Thanksgiving coming up, I am partnering with Walmart to share with you all two recipes we love that are perfect for serving on Thanksgiving. We'll start with a traditional green bean casserole, with an easy (and delicious) twist. Green bean casserole is my favorite Thanksgiving side dish!
I got my fiancé a cast iron skillet as a Christmas gift last year and it is definitely one of his most favorite things to cook with. Although we have so many pots and pans, he prefers the cast iron skillet! It's inexpensive and it somehow makes everything taste so much better than cooking with a traditional pan. Plus, they are chemical-free so they are safer to cook with! They come in lots of different sizes. He uses the 12-inch for the recipe I am about to share, but he also often uses the 8" for everyday things like scrambled eggs!
If you already have a cast-iron skillet, these little silicone handle protectors are a great help when the skillet is hot and it would be the perfect little thing to throw in a Christmas stocking!
We make the traditional green bean casserole right in the cast iron skillet. You are then only getting one thing dirty which makes cleanup easy, too. We follow this recipe (which is seriously so easy because even I can make it) and the twist, which makes it SO much better, is adding BACON!!
The only difference is that you fry the bacon in the cast iron skillet first and once it is cooked, you can crumble the bacon and mix it in with the cream of mushroom soup. Pour out most of the bacon grease from the cast iron skillet, but leave just a little behind and then start going through the steps on the traditional recipe. Leaving that little bit of bacon grease behind and adding in crumbled bacon makes all of the difference and the flavor is out of this world. It's not even that the dish takes on a strong bacon flavor, but it just tastes so much richer.

The next recipe is something I made up on a whim and while you could really eat it year-round, it's a great and easy dressing for Thanksgiving because of the fall flavor from the maple syrup. I usually pour it over a bed of mixed greens and add in finely sliced red onion and blue cheese crumbles. The flavor combinations are delicious. You get a slightly sweet flavor from the maple syrup and then a tangy flavor from the dijon.
I eyeball it based on my own preferences, so you can do that as well! The fun thing about dressings and marinades is that there are no rules or strict recipes! Just mix all of these things together well in a bowl and you have a super delicious salad dressing. You can also use this as a marinade for chicken and it is quite tasty!
- Maple Syrup
- Dijon Mustard
- Roasted Minced Garlic
- Olive Oil
- Cracked Black Pepper
- Dried minced onion
I love making my own dressings. One of my best tips when creating your own dressings is to use really high-quality ingredients. I have cooking olive oil and then a separate 'nicer' olive oil for dressings.
