This past Christmas, my Grammie gave each of us a Christmas-themed brooch from her personal collection of pieces she’s gathered slowly over many years. She has so many, it was so fun to look through all of them. We all wore them with pride over the holidays.
I didn't own any brooches until my new-to-me sparkly Christmas tree, but I found myself reaching for it again and again. At first, because it was my grammie's and I love her and she has exquisite taste. But also, it is beautiful and added an unexpected touch to the outfits I was wearing.
When I was little, my mom had so many brooches. I remember them especially on her coats around the holidays. Most were festive, but some were elegant, too. They felt special, and as a child, I thought they were fun and, in hindsight, a unique way to signal the season.
Somewhere along the way, brooches slipped out of daily fashion. After wearing a brooch over the holidays, I'm now questioning why that happened! I miss wearing the sparkly Christmas brooch... but it would look a bit out of place worn in January!
I think brooches fell out of favor for a few reasons, but mostly because fashion has become so much more casual. I think brooches can seem fussy to some and unnecessary to others. At some point in life, I was in either of those camps.
But if you think about it, it's just something you pin on your clothing, and it's not much different from a necklace or earrings. It's just another accessory to add to an outfit and, in turn, create your own style and individuality.
Wearing my Grammie’s brooch reminded me how powerful a small detail can be. Pinned onto things I’ve worn a bunch, the brooch made the pieces feel more interesting.
Traditionally, brooches were worn on jackets or sweaters. But I don't think they need to live solely on lapels anymore. I love the idea of pinning one onto a tote bag... just a different form of a bag charm. They’re far more versatile than we give them credit for. I've also always loved collecting pins that I add to the pocket flap of one of my Barbour jackets. Not necessarily fancy brooches, but little pins. I have a Tuckernuck pin, Keeneland pin, etc. I think this is such a fun way to personalize the jacket and share my interests.... kind of like wearing a band's T-shirt or collecting matchbooks from a restaurant.
I don’t plan to suddenly amass a large collection. If you browse around, you'll notice they're somewhat hard to find except for on sites like Etsy and The Real Real. Instead, I love the idea of slowly building my own collection over many years. I want to be very intentional in choosing brooches and pins that feel special, timeless, or meaningful.
So today I thought I would share some beautiful brooches I’ve found since browsing in the last several weeks. I'm so curious, do you all regularly wear pins and brooches? Is it something you'd like ot wear or do you think they are passé? If you have a brooch collection, maybe this will inspire you to wear a few soon!
