I love skincare and love a good device, but I approach everything with a healthy dose of skepticism. These masks are pricey, and do we all really need another device, another step into our already packed routine?!
Spoiler: I can only speak for myself, but my Red Light Therapy Mask has surpassed my expectations!
I thought the red light masks I was seeing everywhere were gimmicky. But if you're willing to do a little digging, the science backs up using red light for all sorts of ailments. The many studies I read intrigued me and made me more willing to try the mask. Red and near-infrared light therapies aren’t new, as they’ve been used in dermatology clinics and professional settings for years. The CurrentBody mask simply makes it accessible for at-home use.
CurrenBody gifted me this mask with no strings attached. These are my opinions and results. This post is not sponsored.
What is it?
Let’s start with what it is. The mask is made of flexible silicone and fits comfortably on the face, allowing the red and near-infrared LED lights to sit close to the skin.
Let's talk about light wavelength.
Many different brands sell red light masks, but the number one thing you need to know about these masks is that they are not all created equally. With this technology, the most important thing is to ensure you get a mask with the appropriate wavelength. The CurrentBody mask uses two clinically backed wavelengths: red light (830nm) to stimulate collagen production and improve circulation, and near-infrared light (1072nm) to reduce inflammation and support skin recovery. These wavelengths penetrate different depths, so having multiple wavelengths is also essential. The wavelengths are the *most* important part of the mask because the mask won't work correctly if they are not emitting the ideal wavelengths.
Is it 'worth' the high price tag?
The price tag is steep, and if you are skeptical, it sounds even more ridiculous to pay hundreds of dollars for a light-up mask. I was that skeptical gal. I asked you all if you have a red light mask and what you think of it, and not a single person sent me a bad review- they were all positive. That was my first hint, but it is worth it because I've seen it work well on my skin. I always say that 'worth' is subjective, so take that with a grain of salt.
My justification for the higher price tag is that I got a series of chemical peels many years ago (like 10 years ago). They were several hundred dollars per session, totaling more than this mask. I had to go to an office to have them done and then deal with the annoying peeling effect for days afterward. The results I experienced from the CurrentBody LED Therapy mask are very similar to those of the series of chemical peels I had done years ago. But, I just had to spend 10 minutes a day with the mask on my face in the comfort of my home, and there was absolutely no downtime afterward. It's also a mask I can have on hand for continuous use, whereas I would have to purchase more peels if I wanted them.
While pricey, CurrentBody offers a 60-day money-back guarantee if you are unsatisfied with your results. The mask also comes with a two-year warranty.

How do you use it?
The mask itself is flexible and made of soft silicone that contours to your face with a velcro strap to hold it in place. It’s completely hands-free, so I often wear it while replying to emails or watching TV. It is very straightforward; there is only one button to turn it on and off. Each session is 10 minutes. That's it. It has become a peaceful little ritual in my skincare routine—just ten minutes, five days a week. The lights do not get hot, and it doesn't hurt. It's even more low-maintenance than my beloved microcurrent treatment because you don't need any gel, and you don't need to do anything manually. It's a very hassle-free thing.
The only thing worth mentioning is that you have to use it on a completely bare face. Sometimes I put my skincare on before the red light mask because I forget. But now that it's a part of my nightly routine, I'm less forgetful. You can charge it with your iPhone charger, which makes it so convenient.
Notice a fuller hairline and the faded acne scars (on the right). These photos were taken in natural light and did not undergo editing or filters.
Notice that the skin texture looks improved and more even. There's a subtle discoloration in the center of my cheek that was lessened. These photos were taken in natural light and did not undergo editing or filters.
Before and After
My before and afters are really what you'll want to see. The CB website recommends using the device 3-5 times per week. I used the mask around 6 days per week and noticed results after about 2- 3ish weeks.
On their site, they say you'll see results after 4 weeks. However, for it to work properly, you must be consistent and prepared to use it multiple times weekly.
The first thing that I noticed was clearer-looking skin. At first, I thought my makeup was just randomly going on really well, and then I realized it was because my skin was so smooth and clear! My pores looked less noticeable, and some discoloration from acne scars had minimized.
My biggest hope from the mask was that it would fade the two pesky acne scars on my upper forehead. They have been there for ages, and retinol and glycolic acid have not been enough to get rid of them. After about a month, I still wasn't seeing huge improvements, but the spots started to fade around the 6ish week mark! I am hopeful that with continued use, they will go away entirely.
Since I got this mask in late February, I have continued to use it 5-6 times weekly. In the long run, it's supposed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. I have not noticed a big difference in that department, but I hope that will come with more use, particularly around my eyes, where I notice I am aging the most.
I’ve also experimented with using the mask on my knees; definitely not its intended use, so please follow the brand’s guidelines, not my lead. That said, red light therapy is often studied for its potential to reduce inflammation and pain. I have lingering knee issues from a high school cheerleading injury, including fluid buildup that can cause swelling and discomfort. While I haven’t seen dramatic results, I figured it couldn’t hurt to try. It’s hard to gauge effectiveness given variables like weather and my activity level, so take this with a grain of salt!
A surprising bonus? I also noticed that my hairline is fuller. I do not take any supplements for hair growth, yet you can see in the before-and-after photo how it is fuller. I researched, and apparently, red light therapy can help with hair growth!
It’s important to note that the red light mask was not an overnight miracle for me. Coupled with my regimented skincare routine and microcurrent device, this was a steady, visible improvement that has made my skin look healthier over time.
It's also important to note that aging is an incredible privilege. No one can outrun aging. I don't think anyone needs to try to prevent aging in any way; this is just what I like to do for myself! It's important to feel good in your own skin, and this routine has worked well for me and made me feel confident! I support you in whatever you choose to do to feel great!
